Canadian-born cycling all-rounder, Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) topped the competition at “CrossVegas”, the first major cyclocross race held in conjunction with the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The challenging course attracted thousands of fans and industry insiders, all eager to get a glimpse of top competitors and see who among them was in full race-ready shape.
The race, held under the lights at the Desert Breeze Soccer Complex, pitted Bessette against reigning US champion Katie Compton (Spike Shooter), Katerina Nash and Georgia Gould (both of Luna), Canadian mountain bike legend Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain-Haywood), in her second-ever cyclocross start, and a host of other contenders.
Bessette and Compton shot off the front of the pack early on, and traded pulls to keep their distance from the chasers, a group that included Kelli Emmett (Giant), Wendy Simms (Kona-Les Gets), Mary McConneloug (Seven-Kenda), Alison Sydor and others.
After finishing behind Compton several times in the 2006 season, Bessette turned the tables, with a late-lap surge that created a gap Compton could not cross. Bessette finished strong, padding her lead to win by a sizeable margin.
